Tides of Annihilation: Release Date, Story & Gameplay

📰 Latest: Gamescom 2026 story trailer and hands-on impressions

Tides of Annihilation is a single-player Arthurian action-adventure from Chinese studio Eclipse Glow Games. It is set in a modern London shattered by an invasion from the Otherworld, and it is one of the most anticipated Chinese AAA titles still without a release date.

2. What is Tides of Annihilation?

Tides of Annihilation was announced at Sony's State of Play on February 13, 2025. It is a buy-to-play, single-player action game — not a live-service title and not a Soulslike. The studio describes it as a fast, cinematic action-adventure in the vein of Devil May Cry and Bayonetta, with God of War as a secondary influence.

The game is built around two ideas: a post-apocalyptic London where Arthurian myth has bled into the modern world, and a combat system that lets Gwendolyn command the spectral Knights of the Round Table while fighting alongside them.

3. Release date: still TBA

As of October 21, 2026, there is no official release date. At Gamescom 2026, director Ary Chen declined to give a date, a playtime figure or a boss count, saying development was still ongoing and the team was gathering feedback.

  • At the February 2025 announcement, the official window was 2026.
  • Some storefronts list October 29, 2026 — this is a placeholder date, not an official release date. It happens to coincide with Phantom Blade Zero.
  • Media speculation now mostly points to 2027; IGN and Push Square both say "not before 2027."
  • Wishlisting is open on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and Epic Games Store.
  • Xbox Play Anywhere is confirmed for the Xbox version.
  • There is no public demo download. The 45-minute demo is available at events only, including Beijing Fusion on October 24–25, 2026 (Booth A06).

Treat any specific date you see online as unconfirmed unless it comes from Eclipse Glow Games.

4. Story: London, Avalon and the Fog

The invasion comes from the Otherworld. London is broken apart, its streets fused with medieval ruins and a supernatural Fog. Beyond the city lies Avalon, the otherworldly realm that Gwendolyn must reach.

  • Gwendolyn is the lone human survivor at the centre of the story. She inherits King Arthur's power to command the Fog.
  • Her goal is the Holy Grail, which she believes can save her sister and restore the world.
  • Guinevere is Arthur's queen: a silver-haired, blindfolded figure who emerges from the Fog and gives Gwendolyn the sword that commands the Round Table knights. She is not Gwendolyn's sister.
  • The story deliberately mixes Arthurian legend with other mythologies. A demo boss fight against Anubis takes place in the Great Russell Museum, a location inspired by the British Museum; the game also features a Guan Yu encounter.
  • Guan Yu appears as a mentor in the museum's Chinese pavilion — and speaks Chinese even in the English dub. The game's museum is built around multiple mythologies, including Egyptian and Japanese wings.
  • The theory that Gwendolyn is Arthur's daughter is unconfirmed; neither the game nor the studio has stated it.

5. Characters and voice cast

  • Gwendolyn (格雯德琳) — protagonist, voiced by Angela Sant'Albano (Resident Evil Requiem's Grace Ashcroft). She replaced Jennifer English (Clair Obscur: Expedition 33), who stepped down for health reasons but remains involved as an advisor.
  • Guinevere (桂妮薇儿) — the white-haired mentor figure introduced in the "Beneath the Veil" story trailer.
  • Niniane (宁妮安) — a shapeshifting companion who can become a sword and helps with puzzles, exploration and secret routes.
  • The Knights of the Round Table — spectral allies including Lancelot, Gawain, Kay, Bedivere, Gaheris, Lamorak, Palamedes and Bors. Eclipse Glow says there are 10+ in total, each with distinct abilities, elemental damage and combat roles.
  • Mordred, Anubis, Tyronoe and Geraint — bosses shown or named in the Gamescom 2026 demo. Geraint is an optional boss in the museum's Japanese wing.

6. Combat: the Dual Frontline Battle System

The core system is the Dual Frontline Battle System. Gwendolyn fights on one line while commanding spectral knights on the other.

  • Two loadouts, each with a main and support slot — four active knights in total — and slots can be swapped even mid-combo.
  • 10+ Knights of the Round Table to recruit, each with unique abilities, elemental damage and team roles (defensive, burst damage, flying). Defeating certain knights reportedly makes them Sworn Knights.
  • Knights can be combined for elemental reactions and extended combos.
  • Niniane can transform into a sword, adding a second weapon style and traversal/puzzle options.
  • Colossal Knights the size of mountains serve as both bosses and explorable arenas.
  • Combat is fast and combo-driven, with dodges, counters and weighty attacks — closer to Devil May Cry than Dark Souls.
  • The game features four weapon types, 30+ bosses and a 30+ hour campaign, according to Eclipse Glow's own interviews. It is not a Soulslike; difficulty options and light RPG elements are included.

7. Gamescom 2026: the first public hands-on

At Gamescom 2026 (Cologne, August 26–30, Hall 6, Booth B-050), Eclipse Glow showed the first European public demo and premiered the "Beneath the Veil" story trailer at Opening Night Live.

  • The demo covered a story mission in ruined London and multi-phase boss fights, including Mordred (labelled "medium" difficulty), Anubis and Tyronoe.
  • A 45-minute hands-on session was widely praised for its combat speed and knight-summoning system.
  • The game won "Most Epic" at the Gamescom Awards 2026.
  • PC demo stations ran on RTX 5080s with DLSS 4.5 Dynamic Multi-Frame Generation.
  • The game supports 11 text languages, including Brazilian Portuguese. Voice-over is English and Simplified Chinese only, so Japanese is text/UI only.

8. Why it matters for Chinese AAA games

Eclipse Glow Games is a Chengdu-based studio of roughly 115–150 developers, many with experience on Assassin's Creed, Yakuza and Prince of Persia. It is majority-owned by Tencent but self-publishes Tides of Annihilation.

The game is part of a wider wave of Chinese single-player AAA projects — alongside Black Myth: Wukong, Phantom Blade Zero, WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers and Where Winds Meet — that are moving away from mobile and live-service models toward premium, console-quality action games. Its Arthurian setting is also a departure: instead of Chinese mythology, it reworks a Western myth through a Chinese studio's action-design sensibilities.
